WHAT IS INFLAMMATION?
Inflammation happens in everyone. It is an important part of the normal immune response and occurs as the body is trying to fight off potential infections or recover from injury. The inflammatory process begins when the body releases a signaling chemical that activates white blood cells to move from general circulation to the site of damage. These then produce hormones called cytokines that act as mediators to fight the problem and repair harm to the body. These mediators help heal damaged tissue and trigger pain, fever and redness as part of the reparative process. As the body heals, inflammation should gradually subside – however, when inflammation becomes chronic, it can be harmful.
Inflammation is categorized by two main types:
Acute inflammation usually occurs for a short (yet sometimes severe) period - and often resolves in two weeks or less. Symptoms include redness, warmth, swelling, and pain around tissues and joints that occurs in response to an injury, like when you cut yourself.
Chronic inflammation is a slower and sustained inflammatory response that typically lasts longer than six weeks. Common symptoms include body pain, constant fatigue, mood disorders and frequent infections.

TARGETED SOLUTIONS FOR EVERY SKIN CONCERN
Skin inflammation has many potential causes, including allergies, infections, and autoimmune diseases that can lead to redness, heat, swelling, pain, and itching. Inflammation is also the primary cause of skin dysfunctions including hyperpigmentation, suppression of collagen production, premature aging, psoriasis, eczema, acne, rosacea, and seborrheic dermatitis. Inflammation is also the bane of overall wellness.
TARGETED SOLUTIONS FOR EVERY SKIN CONCERN
Dr. Sturm's curated routines deliver simple, science-backed solutions tailored to your skin’s unique needs.
HOW TO TACKLE INFLAMMATION
The ingredient science in Dr. Sturm’s Molecular Cosmetics collection works to combat inflammation-mediated oxidation, and to provide protection of skin barrier function, hydration, nutrition and healing. Dr. Sturm also advises keeping inflammation at bay by adopting an anti-inflammatory lifestyle - changes to diet and lifestyle have been shown in clinical trials to dramatically reduce inflammation.
WHAT IS AN ANTI-INFLAMMATORY LIFESTYLE?
Living an anti-inflammatory lifestyle is essential to combat inflammation and soothe skin dysfunctions. Prioritizing adequate sleep, getting daily exercise, avoiding stress, protecting against urban and digital pollution, avoiding excess alcohol, sugar, fried and processed foods, while eating anti-inflammatory foods like avocados, salmon, olive oil, tomatoes, nuts, dark berries, and green tea are all key factors.
