 What is Purslane?

What is Purslane?

By DR. BARBARA STURM

24th Mar 2025

I first discovered the benefits of bio-fermented Purslane when I was formulating my original MC1 cream – and it’s remained a foundational ingredient in all my formulations ever since.

At the time, I was working with academic scientists from the Universities of Pittsburgh, Miami and Harvard, who had been studying the beneficial effects of topical and oral Purslane. Struck by its many healing, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging benefits, I decided to include it in the base for my blood plasma MC1 cream. The results were phenomenal – and convinced me that it should form the basis of what was to become my skincare line, Molecular Cosmetics.

What is Purslane?

Scientifically known as Portulaca Oleracea, Purslane is an edible leafy green plant which is packed full of nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids and skin-beneficial minerals like Calcium, Magnesium, and Potassium. This succulent plant is deemed a ‘superfood’ by the Scientific World Journal and features a red stem and small, green leaves.

What are the main benefits of Purslane?

Grown across the world, Purslane has a long history of being used in traditional Eastern medicine. It works both topically and orally to provide powerful anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, nutritive and wound-healing benefits. The plant is enriched with Vitamins A, C and E to support the immune system, reinforce the well-documented Purslane benefits for skin, and promote healthy heart, muscle and bone function.

What are the main Purslane benefits for skin?

Purslane is clinically proven to activate telomerase – commonly known as the ‘youth enzyme’ because of its ability to slow down or reverse the aging process. It’s also rich in Vitamin A, Beta-Carotene, Glutathione, and essential minerals that help support cell regeneration, protect against oxidative damage, and help reduce visible signs of aging. Its natural anti-inflammatory properties soothe the skin, while Omega-3 fatty acids strengthen the moisture barrier, support hydration, and calm inflammation – supporting skin health and longevity.

What form of Purslane do you use in your skincare?

The Purslane we use is a cold extract (macerate) from the plant, which gets fermented with Lactobacillus strains in the lab, i.e. with Lactic Acid bacteria.

Antioxidants, Vitamins and Amino Acids are formed during fermentation and pathogenic germs are suppressed. The result is a bio-ferment which has better bioavailability (meaning it’s more readily absorbed) and works both topically and orally – which is why we use it in our skincare products and our supplements.

How can I incorporate Purslane into my routine?

Purslane is a key ingredient in many of my formulas, working well alongside other skincare ingredients. In my HYALURONIC SERUM, for example, it works in synergy with a blend of low and high molecularly weighted Hyaluronic Acid molecules and has been clinically proven to visibly slow skin aging and deliver lasting hydration. *

Purslane is also integral to my original FACE CREAM, another of my signature innovations.

Can I eat Purslane?

Yes! The leaves, stems and flowers are completely edible and can be eaten raw or cooked. One of my favorite smoothies is Purslane-based; simply blend fresh Purslane with apple, orange and crushed ice. It's delicious. You can also sprinkle fresh Purslane over your favorite salads, soups, and even avocado toast for a nutrient-rich boost.

*CLINICAL TEST OF 56 DAYS. For Dr. Barbara Sturm, skin aging is associated with biological aging, including the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, loss of elasticity and vitality, dehydrated skin and dullness.
